The carbs are in the sugar, not the alcohol
Ethanol itself carries no carbohydrate. Distilling removes everything else, which is why a shot of vodka, gin, whiskey or tequila reads as a flat zero — and why the mixer, not the spirit, is what usually breaks a day.
Fermented drinks keep what the yeast didn't eat. Dry wine keeps almost nothing. Beer keeps maltose and dextrins. Sweet wine, liqueurs and bar mixes keep sugar on purpose.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Dry wine, brut champagne, or a spirit with soda water. Everything else is a compromise.
Servings differ by drink. Each row states its own.
Best Choices
UNDER 4G NET CARBS PER SERVINGA glass or two fits a 20g day without arithmetic.
RULE OF THUMB
If it was distilled, it's zero. If it tastes sweet, it isn't.

THE PART MOST LISTS SKIP
Zero carbs still isn't free
Your liver treats alcohol as a toxin, so it drops everything else to clear it — including making ketones out of your fat.
A gin and soda won't spike your blood sugar
No carbs, no insulin response. That part of the label is honest.
Fat-burning goes on hold for a few hours
The liver has fuel in hand, and no reason to make more.
A higher ketone reading isn't good news here
Acetate registers on some meters. It's a pause, not progress.
WHAT YOUR LIVER BURNS, IN ORDER

LAST IN LINE
SO, IN PRACTICE
Drink on a night you weren't counting on progress.
Two drinks costs you an evening of fat loss — not the adaptation you spent weeks building. Expect the scale to hold rather than move the next day, and know that most of that is water.
Moderate
2–5G NET CARBS PER CANLow per serving, easy to over-drink. One can is a rounding error; four is a third of your day.
COUNT CANS, NOT GRAMS
Three seltzers and a light beer is 12g — a beer you didn't budget for.
Ordering at a bar
01 / THE MIXER IS THE PROBLEM
Soda water, lime, or nothing
A vodka soda is 0g. The same vodka in tonic is about 16g, because tonic is sweetened — it is not soda water with a different name. Diet soda and sugar-free tonic work if they don't bother you.
02 / TOLERANCE DROPS
Two drinks will feel like four
Low glycogen means less water on board and a liver already busy. Plan on half your old limit, and drive nowhere.
03 / SALT AND WATER FIRST
Treat it like keto flu, early
Alcohol and keto are both diuretics. A glass of water and a pinch of salt between drinks does more for tomorrow than anything you take at 1am.
04 / EAT FIRST
Never drink into an empty keto day
Fasting all day and drinking at night is how people end up unwell on keto. Have your fat and protein, then order. A steak and a glass of cabernet costs about 4g and ends the night far better.
Common questions
Does alcohol kick you out of ketosis?+
A dry wine or a straight spirit won't — there's no meaningful carbohydrate to raise insulin. But your liver clears alcohol before it makes ketones from fat, so fat-burning pauses for a few hours. You stay in ketosis; you just stop making progress until the alcohol is gone. Sugary drinks and beer are a different story: those carry enough carbohydrate to end ketosis outright.
Why do I get drunk so much faster on keto?+
Three things stack up. Your glycogen stores are low, so you carry less water for the alcohol to dilute into. Meals are usually smaller and lower in the carbohydrate that slows absorption. And the liver is already occupied with ketone production. Assume half your previous tolerance for the first few months, and re-test it carefully rather than at a wedding.
What are the best low-carb mixers?+
Soda water, sparkling mineral water, a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon, muddled mint or cucumber, bitters in dashes, and sugar-free tonic or diet soda if you tolerate them. Avoid regular tonic, ginger ale, juice, sour mix, grenadine and anything from a bar gun labeled "mix" — most of those are 15–30g per glass. Say "soda water, not tonic" out loud; bartenders hear them as interchangeable.
Are hangovers worse on keto?+
Reports go both ways, and the difference is usually electrolytes. Keto already runs low on sodium and water; alcohol pushes both lower, which produces the headache and flatness people blame on the drink. Water and salt between drinks, a broth or salted snack before bed, and a normal keto breakfast the next morning handle most of it. If you drank sugary mixers, the sugar crash is doing its own work on top.
