WHY THE LIST COMES FIRST
Most people don't quit keto — they run out of food
The diet is simple enough to explain in a paragraph. What breaks it is a Wednesday evening with nothing in the fridge but the makings of a sandwich.
Stock these five categories once and the decisions stop being decisions — dinner becomes whatever is already there.
THE LIST
Five categories, one cart

HOW THESE FIGURES WERE SET
Every figure is net carbs — total carbohydrate minus fiber — for the serving named beneath the item. Produce figures are taken from the vegetable and fruit lists unchanged, so the two agree. A range means one of two things: the row covers more than one food (almonds run higher than pecans), or the figure depends on the brand — sausages, stock and cured meat, where the label is the only reliable source.
WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS
Why it's worth shopping this way
One randomized trial set a ketogenic diet against ordinary calorie cutting. At six months, three things had moved.
9.3%
OF BODY WEIGHT
Mean loss in the keto group over six months, against 4.9% for the calorie-restricted group — close to double.
−0.3%
HbA1c
Average fall in three-month blood sugar, against −0.1% in the comparison group. This is the number a doctor watches.
−7.7
mmHg SYSTOLIC
Mean drop in blood pressure, against −2.6 mmHg. No rise in LDL cholesterol was seen in either group.
Lim S.L. et al., Nutrients 2024 — pragmatic randomized controlled trial of a healthy ketogenic diet against an energy-restricted diet in adults with obesity. The trial capped net carbs at 50g a day; the list below holds to a tighter 20g. Individual results vary, and none of this is medical advice.
Shopping questions
Isn't keto expensive?+
It doesn't have to be. The cheap end of this list is also the useful end: eggs, chicken thighs, ground beef, canned fish, frozen spinach, cabbage, store-brand butter. The cost creeps in with the specialty products — almond flour, keto bars, sugar-free syrups — and almost none of that is necessary. Cuts with bones and fat are cheaper per meal than lean fillets and taste better for this way of eating.
Is it worth buying in bulk?+
For the pantry, yes — oils, nuts, seeds and dried herbs keep for months and are meaningfully cheaper in larger sizes. For meat, buy the family pack and portion it into freezer bags the day it comes home; that one habit removes most of the mid-week improvising. Vegetables are the exception: buy those small and often, apart from frozen spinach and frozen berries, which are better value than fresh and never go off on you.
What should I always keep stocked?+
Six things make a meal possible on any evening: eggs, butter, cheese, frozen spinach, canned fish and olive oil. If those are in the house you are never more than ten minutes from something that fits. Everything else on this list is variety rather than insurance.
How often should I shop?+
Once a week for the bulk of it, with one short top-up for fresh produce around day four. Trying to buy a full week of salad and greens in one go usually ends with half of it thrown away, which is where people conclude keto is expensive. Protein and pantry on the big trip, leaves and avocados on the small one.
